1917- The 16th (Irish)and 36th (Ulster) Divisions were committed to the Passchendaele Campaign when the Battle of Langemarck commenced at 04.45 hrs.

During the days fighting L/Cpl Frederick Room of the 2nd Bn Royal Irish Regt earned a Victoria Cross.


1982- GUBU entered Irish politics when, Malcolm McArthur, wanted for the murder of a nurse named Bridie Gargan, was found in the flat of Patrick Connolly, the Attorney General.

Taoiseach, Charlie Haughey, when told of the event, said it was grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented. Conor Cruise O’Brien used the acronym to describe FF politics.

1355

Philippa Plantagenet, Countess of Ulster, was born in England. She was grand daughter of Edward III of England and inherited her title from her mother, Elizabeth, the daughter of William Donn de Burgh. Philippa married Edmund Mortimer, Earl of March. Through her seniority in the line of Succession, the house of York laid claim to the throne of England and precipitated the Wars of the Roses. Her Great Grandson was Edward IV. Philippa died in Cork in 1382.

1991- Evanna Lynch, actress, was born in Termonfeckin, Co. Louth. She plays Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films.
