1316- The Second Battle of Athenry was fought in Co. Galway. The Anglo-Irish, led by Richard de Bermingham and William de Burgh fought the Old Irish Phelim O’Connor and Tadhg O’Kelly, for control of Connacht. The Normans won. Approximately 7,000 men fought and over 1,100 died, Phelim and Tadhg among them.

1942- Gen. Montgomery took command of the 8th Army in North Africa. Though born in London, Monty’s family was from Donegal.

1971- Roy Keane, footballer, born in Cork.

1985- Roy O’Donovan, footballer, born in Cork.

Deaths

1984

Garda Francis Hand was killed by the IRA at Drumree, Co. Meath.

I did not know that. A close elation of Basil Brooke`s was shot the July before that in dublin as well he was a member of a committee that reported on inefficiencies in the police force and recommended a tougher line.
