1633- Sir Thomas Wentworth became Lord Deputy of Ireland.

1909- Louis Blériot made the first crossing of the
English Channel from Calais to Dover
in a powered aircraft. Blériot made the trip of 23 miles in just under 36 minutes.

1914- In response to the Austrian ultimatum to Serbia, Russia declared that it would act to protect Serbian sovereignty.


1920- RIC Detective Sergeant William Mulherin was killed outside St. Patrick's church in Bandon, Co. Cork. Liam Deasy claimed taht he was the Chief Intelligence Officer in West Cork


1953- A truce ended the Korean War.

1981- Pte Thomas Metcalfe won a Military Medal for Gallantry in Portlaois Prison.


1993- Israel launches Operation Accountability in Lebanon. It was a week long bombardment of Lebanese towns and villages that killed 120 Lebanese civilians and an undetermined number of Hezbollah fighters.

1997- Fr Brendan Smyth was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the sexual abuse of 20 children.

1988- Anthony Stokes was born in Dublin. He currently plays football for Sunderland.
