Pope 'ashamed' of US clergy abuse

BBC World News

It is good to hear it but can we take it as being a genuine commitment that the Church has mended the systemic errors which have led us to this point?

Hopefully. But Child Protection Measures should be formulated and implemented locally (at the maximum on a national level) because it allows for greater scrutiny. Hence there should be a condemnation of past actions by the Vatican, a commitment to future child protection but a back seat role. That is my opinion and I've had a moderate amount to do with child protection.

I would like to know that they are ashamed of not only the abuse but how they dealt with it. I would like to see the Church undertaking to deal openly with all law enforcement agancies unless there is a real risk of persecution of victims or of the Church.
