On This Day 11th July in Irish History

1708- The Battle of Oudenarde was fought in Belgium during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy commanded the allied armies that defeated the French. Marlborough's Quartermaster General, Irish-born William Cadogan, commanded the troops who prevented the French crossing the River Scheldt allowing Marlborough to cross. The Royal Irish fought on the British side while Irish troops also fought for France.

1798- The United Irishmen attacked Clonard, Co Meath.

1921- A truce was declared, ending the War of Independence.


1927- Charlie Tully was born in Belfast. He played football for Glasgow Celtic and Northern Ireland. His claim to fame is scoring 2 goals against England including one direct from a corner kick.

1929- David Kelly, actor, was born in Dublin.

1935- Oliver Napier, leader of the Alliance Party 1971-1984, was born in Northern Ireland.

1945- Patrick McGrath was born in Dublin. He is currently Bishop of San Jose, California.

1962- Mrs Doyle, aka Pauline McLynn, was born in Sligo.
